the piano drum!
The culture in: Maboneng 🗾
Goodisnyc recently came to the realisation of the meaning behind Johannesburg's diverse and colourful inner-city suburb, Maboneng. In the South African 'Sesotho' language, Maboneng means "a place of light." Experiencing this cultural precinct, you witness the true meaning of this, seeing people from different parts of the world, with various experiences and statuses, come to this place of light for a better chance, a good time, and sometimes a getaway to explore the very diversity that lies in the Maboneng Precinct.

don't judge a book by their beer 🍺
When are we gonna stop judging people from their exterior, judging the look by its cover? OR WHAT IT DRINKS!
Goodisnyc Magazine is looking for the council that decided on what drinks were appropriate for certain genders to consume. Case in point, the beer - Carling Black Label. 🍺
The magazine did a light research to find out what men thought about woman who drank Black Label and vice versa.
It was discovered that although woman also have stigmas and stereotypes about the kind of men that consumed the beer, the men's opinions on the quality of woman that consumes Black Label were much harsher with their character being amounted to almost nothing.
The question the magazine would like to probe is:
What if that woman, who you dismissed as ‘ratchet,’ is actually a neuroscientist with a successful career? Are you willing to miss out on the love of your life simply because you saw a man with a beer bottle in hand and made a snap judgment?

City Culture: Johannesburg
As you may know, different cities have different cultures within them. The way of life in Cape Town and how its people go about daily life is different from the styles and processes of city-zens in Durban or even Johannesburg. You can also find diversity within regions and areas within the city. Take Newtown and Maboneng for instance, although they exist in one city and have relatively similar cultures, there are still some distinctions that create a sense of a multicultural city in the City of Gold. Here, a short film of a typical day in Maboneng, around Jewel City, visualizes the colourful, diverse culture of this neighbourhood. The culture here is mostly populated by black youth entrepreneurs and young professionals of different cultural backgrounds, languages, and life experiences. In this shared environment, these groups blend together to create a common ground of shared lingo, style, and experiences, making them a diverse group of one. This is best witnessed by a visitor or tourist through the music, architecture, communication, and the vibrant, artistic atmosphere that we have previously curated and published in our previous articles.

To crossover... as a young man 🌈🦵🏾
Ukuwela in Zulu might connote "falling into" or rather "to cross"—as part of the Nguni language, this means the same in Ndebele. To cross over to manhood.
Amasokana are young boys who have undergone Ukuwela, the Ndebele male initiation ceremony marking their transition into adulthood. This rite of passage is more than a ritual; it is an intense period of learning, discipline, and cultural indoctrination. Through initiation, these boys are introduced to traditional lore, survival skills, and the deep mysteries of their people.
Clad in distinctive, colorful attire, Amasokana embody the vibrancy of Ndebele identity. Their garments serve as a visual declaration of their new status, symbolizing resilience and heritage. Beyond the personal transformation, Ukuwela reinforces communal bonds, ensuring the continuity of traditions in a rapidly changing world.
In Ndebele culture, becoming a man is not just about age but about knowledge, responsibility, and the honor of carrying forward the wisdom of ancestors.
